A Line in the Sea (2019) is a three-channel video work made by Australian-Balinese artist, Leyla Stevens as a response to the 1970s cult surfing film Morning of the Earth, which placed Bali as an idyllic surfing destination for Western tourism. The film follows surfers Bonne Gea and Dhea Natasya as they move through a series of slow-moving coastal landscapes, reorientating the white male protagonists of the original film to focus upon the rising generation of Indonesian female surfers in Bali. A Line in the Sea asks viewers to reconsider Bali, drawing attention to erased truths about the island that continues to be imagined as a peaceful paradise.
